Many people following the ketogenic diet (Aka keto) are concerned about its ability to help lose weight fast and maintain it.
Once again, new studies have shown that diets low in carbohydrates have a huge advantage: they can burn 10 times more fat than other diets.
This is the major finding of research published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews.
As part of this study, scientists took 30 adults who had been diagnosed with the metabolic syndrome.
Also known as Syndrome X, this syndrome is characterized by a set of health disorders that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Affecting millions of people, the most common causes are overweight and too much sugar intake that results in insulin resistance.
To return to the study, participants were randomly divided into three groups:
A group that has adopted a ketogenic diet without doing sports.
Another group ate a standard diet and did not exercise.
A third group who ate a standard diet this time exercising for 30 minutes a day for five days a week.
Here's what they found: In 10 weeks, the group on a ketogenic diet had "significant" changes in weight, body fat percentage, BMI, hemoglobin A1c (a test that a person's blood sugar) and ketone bodies (result of fat burning by the body).
If you're not aware, the keto diet is a high-fat diet, low in carbohydrates and moderate in protein.
Carbohydrates are usually replaced by fats, which allows the body to pass (after several days of adaptation) in a metabolic state called ketosis.
The keto diet generally eliminates sugar, processed foods, light foods, cereals and carbohydrate-rich fruits.
Instead, practitioners are encouraged to eat a lot of starchy vegetables, lean meats and fish, high-fat dairy products, nuts and seeds.
